ANDREW C. HOU, MD

Andrew Hou, M.D. is a board-certified ophthalmologist, cornea specialist, and cataract doctor in Sarasota, with an expertise in refractive and complex cataract surgery, anterior segment reconstruction and corneal transplantation.

Fellowship-trained cataract, refractive, and cornea surgeon, Dr. Andrew C. Hou spent his formative years in Copenhagen, Denmark before growing up in New York City. After graduating summa cum laude from City College of New York, he earned his medical degree from SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed a surgical internship and ophthalmology residency at Henry Ford Hospital where served as chief resident. He then completed a fellowship in Cornea, Refractive, External Disease and Anterior Segment Reconstruction at the prestigious Dean McGee Eye Institute.

Dr. Hou specializes in premium cataract and lens replacement surgery as well as the most cutting-edge cornea surgeries including Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), ultrathin Descemet Stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK), advanced keratoconus treatments, LASIK, and PRK. He brings a wealth of knowledge for therapy in ocular surface disease, severe dry eyes, Fuchs’ dystrophy, keratoconus, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). In glaucoma surgery, Dr. Hou specializes in ab-interno canaloplasty (ABiC), a procedure which opens up the natural outflow channels of the eye to restore normal aqueous flow, without damaging tissue or leaving behind a device in the eye.

Outside of work, Dr. Hou spends a lot of time with his wife Alicia Alvarez, who is also a physician in Allergy and Immunology. They were married in Sarasota and welcomed a baby girl. They enjoy traveling, gardening, and cooking together.
